Calm Abiding / Shamatha
Calm-abiding means free the mind from attachment and aversion. To stop grasping.
This is like leveling a field. When mind is stable, we can do one-pointed meditation
of loving kindness.
Do everything that you do for sentient beings, this is concentration.
Don’t let the mind wander. This is scattering.
Distraction comes easy because we have habituated to it.
Don’t follow thoughts. This is an obstacle.
Thinking about past and future is scattering.
Don’t be easily distracted.
Loss of clarity is ‘sinking’. Image comes, then fades. Like a stone on the surface
of water. It remains for an instant, then slowly sinks.
Apply antidotes to scattering and sinking.
Be content.
To arise Wisdom realizing selflessness, we first need to calm the mind. When water
is turbulent, we cannot see deep. When water is calm, we can see deep.
