Enlightenment
Enlightenment is a state free from grasping. It is beyond all extremes. It is beyond
samsara and nirvana.
Enlightenment is Jang-Chub in Tibetan. Jang means ‘to purify’. What is it that is
purified? It is the habit of self-clinging. Chub means ‘to gather excellent qualities’.
When self-clinging is purified, it is transformed into a mind wishing others’ benefit.
This is what is meant by Enlightenment.
Buddha in Tibetan is Sang-Gye. ‘Sang’ means to awaken from the deep sleep of grasping.
It refers to purification of dualistic view of self and others. When this is accomplished,
we engage in activities to bring about benefit of others. ‘Gye’ means ‘to increase’.
It refers to increase in willingness to benefit others. When we purify dualistic
view, we increase the quality of abiding free of conceptual thought in Buddha Nature.
On this basis, we become Buddha.
We possess the basis of enlightenment. We only have to realize it. How? Through bodhicitta,
the mind wishing to accomplish other’s benefit. Self-clinging is delusion - we will
see this. When we Wake up, we will transcend the Three Spheres of self, other, and
all phenomena.
