Equanimity
Equanimity means purification of attachment and aversion. It has to do with overcoming
attachment and aversion in the mind. It is a practice internal to the mind.
Investigate why does each – friend, enemy, stranger – fall into its category? Strangers
are not strangers forever. They can change into friends. Enemies were not enemies
forever, they were kind at other times. Enemy is a delusion we create to blame our
problems on others. We are not accounting for our own faults in creating our own
suffeirng. We categorize friend, enemy and stranger back and forth. These categorizations
are subject to change. They are not inherent. Equanimity means to overcome this illusory
classification scheme and to replace it with compassion.
Don’t regard beings as objects of attachment, aversion, indifference.
When there is very little attachment and aversion, there is the presence of a state
of mind that is balanced. This is called Equanimity. This state of mind is at peace.
It becomes like space. Mind sees its own True Nature.
Equanimity does not mean indifference. It means equal compassion.
Buddhas of the past practiced by extending love and compassion equally.
Friends and enemies are not as real as they appear. There is no great reason for
friends to be close and enemies to be far.
Be close to people you are not close to.
Mahayana - View is bodhicitta. Path is mother sentient beings. Fruit is Equanimity.
