Merit Field
There are two types of merit field. Field of sentient beings: you generate loving
kindness and compassion to them, and try to do things to benefit them. Field of Lamas,
Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dakas, Dakinis: you generate devotion to them, make mental
and material offerings, prostrations, prayers. Why we do these things? To get rid
of attachment to “I” and “my.”
Don’t be too obsessed with your own problems. Others have problems too. This is why
we visualize all beings around us when we go for refuge.
There are two types of merit fields – holy beings and living beings. Both are necessary,
as we have two types of actions.
Believe you are in presence of this source of refuge, even if you cannot see. Look
at refuge assembly with faith.
Arrange offerings in front of them, even if you visualize.
Refuge tree with deities is source of generating bodhicitta mind. They are objects
of mandala offering.
Visualization
Sambhogakaya buddhafield appears when we purify our view of this reality.
Refuge place is not ordinary place. It is rainbow pure land, with a wish-fulfilling
tree. It has five branches. On the back branch is the teachings of dzogchen, sutra
and tantra - a huge mountain resonating with vowels and consonants.
How to transform into pure realm? Vanish ordinary conceptual thoughts.
As refuge objects emanate rays of light, imagine they touch all sentient beings.
Their gross body, karma and defilements are all purified. They dissolve into refuge
objects. Remain in this deep, calm state - in clarity of mind that is vast like space
- free from all thoughts.
Each deity in the field of merit has three syllables in three places.
In the bardo it is easy to visualize. We don’t have a physical body.
