Sufferings
Make these contemplations completely real. This is our strength to renounce negative
deeds. This is how to develop wish to be liberated.
Meditate on sufferings of samsara. Develop a tender heart of sadness.
Come out of meditation with a sense that you don’t want anyone to experience these
sufferings.
Suffering is reality. That is why it is called ‘Truth of Suffering’.
Connect with the suffering. Feel helpless, sad. Then prayer becomes fervent, real.
If you are away from suffering, you are away from dharma. The gods have so much pleasure,
there is no reason to practice dharma.
‘I am suffering. This must come from a cause.’ The root cause is self-grasping.
How to abandon suffering? Abandon the cause of suffering. Abandon the ten non-virtuous
deeds. Cultivate virtuous actions.
If we remember suffering, we would not dare to do non-virtuous actions.
The teachings are not given to increase knowledge. They are given to increase disgust
for samsara. Bring about an inclination to practice.
See everything is pervaded by impermanence. Meeting ends with separation. Accumulation
goes away. Then you will see that samsara is pervaded by the nature of suffering.
Present suffering comes from past karma not exhausted.
Nature of fire is heat. Nature of samsara is suffering. Generate renunciation.
Suffering does not come from others. It does not come by chance.
See that mothers need happiness. They are separated from happiness.
Arise compassion. Produce genuine feeling to practice dharma. Without this, there
is no growth.
Check the difficulties in other realms.
If you think lower realms is suffering, check the upper realms.
Feel the suffering of this other being.
The way to meditate on sufferings is to take upon yourself. What would I do if I
was born in the hell realms? Would I be able to get out? What are the causes to be
born in the hell realms? If I cannot bear the sufferings in the human realm, what
would I do in hell realms? The result is that one allocates more time for practice.
Suffering of conditional nature of all phenomena:
It is difficult to understand because it is not about pain – it is about ignorance.
We cannot see this because we are not sensitive enough. For us it is like hair on
the skin. For holy beings it is like hair in the eyes.
